Success metrics for commercial filmmakers and studios are clear. But what about documentary filmmakers, for whom profit is not as important? How can they measure success, especially given the diversity of social effects and effect sizes their work seeks to generate? StoryPilot was conceived as one answer to this question. A free online application, currently in beta, Storypilot aggregates metrics for nearly 1,000 documentary films around 16 social issues, and presents a conceptual framework for thinking about the diversity of impact of these films. It is intended as a tool for media makers, investors, and anyone who views documentary media as a critical part of their social change strategy.
